Poole harbour – manila clam models

The whole point of these models was to find out if it was plausible for manila clam larvae to move with the tides all the way from Poole Harbour to Southampton Water. Manila clam were introduced into Poole Harbour by the government to create a new fishery. They turned up in Southampton Water, some wondered if they had got there under their own steam or whether a fisher had accidently extended the fishery by accidently dumping a load of clam in Southampton Water. The model shows that the larvae could have got there themselves under the action of the tides. I wrote a scientific paper about these models – it’s listed under the link on the right, with other scientific pubs.
